The Victorian ball-suit would be of the very best cloth, new and glossy and of the latest style as to the cut. The waistcoat would be low, so as to disclose an ample shirt-front, fine and delicately plaited; it was not embroidered, but small gold studs were used for decoration.

Balls were held to celebrate royal birthdays, as well as on Twelfth Night and many other occasions.
How many people are in a royal ball?
Royal ball-room guide 48 couples, and the author has had the honour of introducing it to be danced with six couples, and as many as eight couples. The formation of the figures is most beautiful, and gives the dancer an elegant and graceful appearance. The third figure here introduced is entirely my own composition.

How did a dance card work?
A dance card is simply a card that was provided at large balls and dances with a list of the dances for the evening with a space beside it. The ladies would each have a card, sometimes with a small attached pencil, and when a gentleman asked her to dance, he would write his name in for a particular agreed upon dance.
What does my dance card is full mean?
In modern times the expression “dance card” is often used metaphorically, as when someone says “pencil me into your dance card,” meaning “find some time to spend with me”. Conversely, claiming one’s “dance card is full” implies that even though they may be interested, they have no time for another person.

There’s no compulsory dress code. Wear what you’ll feel comfortable in. It can get cold in the theatre, so consider an extra layer. And if you’re seeing a show on an outdoor stage, bring warm and weather-proof clothing!
