Cookie cutters are a great way to bake, whether you use them to make cookies of your favorite animal or character, or just to get that perfect star shape every time! Opening up a whole new world of cookie cutters is 3D printing, because the sky’s the limit in terms of what shapes you can design, customize, and print.
It was really, really easy making these cutters. After setting up my 3D printer it took about 10 minutes to go from a sketch… to the cutters forming on the bed of my 3D printer… It took FOREVER for the things to actually print, but after about 7 hours of waiting, I finally had my first set of cookie cutters.
You Will Need
Sketch or print out the designs you’d like for your cookie cutters. Cover the design with a thin sheet of plastic and heat up your 3D printing pen. Trace the outline of your design. Trace around the outside of the design, making your cutter a little thicket.

Use Food-Grade Filaments
Also known as PLA, it’s a biodegradable filament made of cornstarch derivatives. You can use it to print cookie cutters at a low temperature of 158°F (75°C). One of the best things about PLA is that it rarely deforms during cooling. It happens to exude a sweet scent, too!

PLA (Polyactic Acid) without additives
PLA is a 3D printing material that is safe for food contact. With plastic injection molding, this material is used to make packaging.
Is Inland PLA food safe?
The study found that PLA is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) when used in contact with food. Their summary concluded that PLA releases a small amount of lactic acid into foods. Lactic acid is a common food ingredient, that is even found in breast milk.
