Since Clear Gesso doesn’t contain as much pigment or calcium carbonate as original- formula gesso, strictly speaking it’s probably more analogous to acrylic matte mediums than to heavy-bodied white gesso.
Is clear gesso white?
Gesso is traditionally white, but nowadays you can also buy black, clear gesso and colored gesso readymade (these link to Blick Art Materials, and if you make a purchase I get a small commission that helps support this site). You can also tint your gesso to make any color you want.
Is gesso transparent or opaque?
It is worth noting that diluted gesso, whilst being easier, to apply will be more transparent. Many artists do not like this and prefer a finish with high opacity. You should bear this in mind before deciding on whether or not to dilute or how much to dilute.
What can I use instead of clear gesso?
For general purposes, acrylic matte medium works well for priming canvases. It has a consistency similar to gesso so it’s easy to apply to the canvas with a brush. You can thin the first coat with a little water but I find that it works fine straight from the bottle.
